MELBOURNE SKA ORCHESTRA “GET SMART” WITH MARCH TOUR

_N1Q5570_MSO_100dpi
MELBOURNE SKA ORCHESTRA had an incredible year in 2013 with the release of their debut album taking things up a notch or ten.

MSO was nominated for an ARIA award for Blues and Roots album of the year and took out the Age EG World Music and the Reggae Steady Ska album of the year awards.

However, it is the stage where this 30-odd piece truly shine. MSO started selling out headline shows within a few months of their album release and have become a highlight of the National festival circuit with a sway of high profile International offers starting to land.

Fronted by Nicky Bomba (Bomba, John Butler Trio, Bustamento), MSO bring an 18 piece horn section, a mean rhythm section, percussionist, organist, keys and 4 singers. The “Get Smart” Tour demands you to get your body moving with the life force that is MELBOURNE SKA ORCHESTRA.

BOMBA and BUTLER dance to a new Ska…

In a personal statement to fans over the weekend, John Butler & Nicky Bomba announced the departure of Bomba from the John Butler Trio. Nicky’s involvement with his many successful projects, particularly the rise of the Melbourne Ska Orchestra, is the reason behind the change. Nicky and John both agreed on the focusing of energies as a positive step forward.

In May this year the Melbourne Ska Orchestra embarked on their first debut album tour, selling out venues in Sydney (The Metro), Melbourne (Forum) & Brisbane (The Tivoli) .The response was overwhelming, and the self-titled album gained rave reviews and radio support nationally.

To celebrate this new chapter, the band has just released a new single ‘THE DIPLOMAT’ from their acclaimed self-titled debut album. (A timely title given the election frenzy!). Setting out on tour in September, the 30-piece ramshackle juggernaut that is the Melbourne Ska Orchestra will hit BigSound (Brisbane), Adelaide, Fremantle & Perth, followed up by a host of festivals and a Sydney date in November.

The announcement seems to have received the respectful blessings of many fans with an understanding of John and Nicky’s long association.
It is evident the respect is high between the two, Butler stating:

Nicky has been a part of the Trio in some way or another in different forms over the past 10 years, and somehow I think he will always be some kind of thread in the weave that we are. We are blood and soul music brothers. But Nicky is a front man through and through, and over the last few years watching his amazing Melbourne Ska Orchestra go from strength to strength and the opportunities for this grand dream of his open up wider and wider I had to ask him, and myself; is now a good time for him to ride that horse while she’s heading for a full gallop? Seeing him play to a sold out Metro City gig in Sydney a few months ago made my heart full and happy. It felt and looked “right”. It is an amazing time in Nicky’s world as all his stars are aligning for his own project, and I honour that path completely and am so happy to watch my brother shine. John Butler

Nicky Bomba stated:

As a songwriter and performer in my own right, the time felt right to hop back on my own ship to nurture the stories I’ve created. Along with my other projects, The Melbourne Ska Orchestra has gathered some steam of late and the stretching of energies and clashing of dates meant something had to give. John and I understood the scenario and like seasoned travellers at a crossroad, we both happily agreed on this GPS recalculation! Nicky Bomba

Melbourne Ska Orchestra presents…THE DIPLOMAT TOUR

MSO

Melbourne Ska Orchestra (MSO) hit the road earlier this year to celebrate the release of their debut self-titled album. Managing to fill venues with hoards of smiling faces and dancing bodies. . A 100% strike rate of rave reviews, packed venues with hoards of smiling faces and dancing bodies, the grand adventure is well and truly underway.

Although touring 30+ members is no mean feat, the time has come to hit the road again and take this unique ramshackle train a little farther afield. Starting in Brisbane at the BigSound conference in September, MSO will then travel to Adelaide and Western Australia, before heading back to the East Coast for a Sydney show and run of festivals including; Caloundra and Queenscliff.

An explosive celebration of music unfolds on stage with some of Australia’s finest musicians, when the 30-odd piece orchestra hits the stage. Imagine the force of an 18 piece horn section, a mean rhythm section, percussionist, organist and 4 singers and you may only begin to understand the life force that is the Melbourne Ska Orchestra.

Fronted by Nicky Bomba (Bomba, John Butler Trio, Bustamento), with his professional, energetic and impulsive conducting style, Melbourne Ska Orchestra is a fun-loving big band experience. Influenced by the golden ska period of the 60’s, the 2Tone jump up from the UK, their new album of original material showcases the international quality of their songs. A massive hit at festivals; the MSO is fast becoming a must-see institution with members hailing from some of the best ska and reggae bands in Australia.

Out now on FOUR|FOUR, the self-titled debut album from the Melbourne Ska Orchestra is the culmination of years of passion and performance from one of the most energetic and inspired ensembles currently winning over audiences right across the country. This is music at its most entertaining; vibrant, surprising, and with a beat to shame the Devil. This is Ska.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the new single release, late August. “The Diplomat”. Featuring vocals by Nicky Bomba, the sultry Rebecca Ari and Pat Powell (‘Best Things In Life Are Free’, as seen on the National Freeview TVC), and with that distinctive Big Band sound, the song is sure to get your money maker skankin.

“The gig was amazing”. – Lachlan Douglas, Scene Magazine

“The sheer amount of manic movement and spirited skanking evident at the show simply proves the power of Ska and Reggae. There’s something in the music that makes people move without thinking, seemingly hypnotized.” – Jon Jobbagy – AU Review

“It’s a crime that the Melbourne Ska Orchestra are not more popular… The MSO put on an outstanding show that lit up the room and they wrung every ounce of enjoyment out of a crowd that ignored any specific demographic and who were all there together to skank Friday into oblivion. Mission accomplished.” – Matt MacMaster – The Music/Drum Media
